We’ve been on the march. Last week, three CAC team members—Ari, Bertha and Brenda—caravanned across the U.S. from Las Vegas to Washington, D.C. as part of the #FreedomRide2021.
On the 60th Anniversary of the 1961 Freedom Rides for civil rights, Unite HERE and Black Voters Matter teamed up for the Freedom Ride 2021 to stand against the wave of voter suppression laws sweeping the country.
Nearly 2,000 union members and allies mobilized for this cross-country trip leading up to a march on the National Mall calling on congress to pass H.R. 1, the For The People Act. This legislation will protect and expand voting rights, reduce the influence of money in politics, limit gerrymandering, and more.
It was an honor to join San Diego’s delegation—organized by our partners at Unite HERE Local 30—with other members of the San Diego Green New Deal Alliance and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council.
Special thank you to CAC Board Member Rick Bates—Research and Policy Analyst at Unite HERE Local 30 and Vice Chair of the San Diego Green New Deal Alliance—for inviting us along this historic journey!
We know that voter suppression is a climate justice issue because the Black and Brown communities on the frontlines of climate change and environmental injustice are the same communities facing targeted voter suppression.
If we want to win a future with clean air, clean water, healthy communities, and good, union jobs for EVERYONE, we must ensure that EVERY vote is counted.
“We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
